Does anyone have a favorite VA lender or loan officer they’d recommend?
The lender is less important than the loan officer or broker, unless you’re dealing with a call center.
I prioritize working with someone who values effort, knowledge, experience, availability, transparency, and honesty over just the lowest price. Once I find someone trustworthy, I stick with them. Being transactional might save you money occasionally, but long-term relationships with a good loan officer lead to better outcomes overall.

Couldn’t agree more. The loan officer makes the biggest difference. Rates and pricing can usually be matched, but a good LO ensures the entire process runs smoothly.

LoanDepot is a great option. They’re a top VA lender with sharp pricing and a solid process for handling VA loans.

I had a great experience with PenFed Credit Union and worked specifically with Jeremy Mitchell. He’s very knowledgeable and has been in the industry a long time. My parents even used him after I recommended him. You can probably find him online easily.
I highly recommend Mark Deacon at Veteran Home Advantage. I’ve worked with him for a VA loan and refinanced twice. He’s fantastic!
Definitely shop around. I’ve mostly used National Bank of KC (NBKC) for my VA loans and recommended them to many friends over the years. However, when we moved back from overseas recently, I found a better deal through Owning.com (owned by G Rate).
They offered a great rate of 5.25% on a 30-year fixed $650k loan with $50k down and a $2k lender credit. Closed on time, smooth underwriting, and no surprises. This was in late September, so rates may have changed, but I recommend getting written loan estimates from both NBKC and Owning to compare.
Be cautious of companies or loan officers who overplay the “veteran” angle—some may charge higher rates or costs. Large banks like Chase or Wells Fargo often match or even beat offers, especially if you’re moving other accounts to them. I recommend Damian at NBKC or Lance at Owning, but anyone at these lenders should be helpful. Good luck!
